On April 1st, 2004, in place of my strip All Over Coffee in the San Francisco Chronicle, I ran a strip called small potatoes. I wanted to show that All Over Coffee was a conscious choice in aesthetic and voice. I also wanted to poke fun at myself, and, more specifically, those who had been complaining about AOC. Off and on over the years I considered making a series of small potatoes and would occassionally scribble a scene in my notebook. They were always bitter, angry little cartoons and every time I did one I thought, well, I guess this isn't it. Then, after a busy year, including producing and releasing the first collection of All Over Coffee, I took a break from my usual work and picked up again my old habit of taking a sketchbook to the coffeeshop to see what came out. I had a color scheme in mind that I wanted to play with, and the potatoes started off as a vehicle for that. Next thing I knew, I had several solid pieces and the the strip seemed to be born. Rather than post these as weeklies on my paulmadonna site, I thought the potatoes should have their own home. The url smallpotatoes was of course taken for some ridiculous unused purpose, so I bought angrylittlepotatoes.com, which seemed more than appropritate. I'm not quite sure what to make of these little pots yet, and they haven't found their solid form, but they make me me laugh, and creatively, it's been refreshing to work in a different style and voice these past couple weeks. It's been a lot of fun to revisit the expressive and quick production of comics, plus, dole out politically incorrect scenes, so though I haven't committed to a schedule, I'll continue to make more and post them on the site as I do. - paul 01 13 08 |
