Paul Madonna

Paul Madonna is an artist and author whose pen-and-ink work has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, galleries across the United States, and books published by City Lights. His weekly comic strip, All Over Coffee, ran in the Chronicle from 2000 to 2017, pairing intricate architectural drawings of San Francisco with fragments of overheard conversation and interior monologue.

Madonna's drawings are studies in attention — the geometry of a doorway, the shadow cast by a fire escape, the particular quality of afternoon light on a Victorian facade. His line is precise and unhurried, built up from observation rather than imagination.

He has exhibited at the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, the Cartoon Art Museum, and in group shows nationally. His books are in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Public Library and the Library of Congress.

I draw the city the way a writer takes notes — not to record it, but to understand it. The act of drawing forces a kind of slow looking that photography cannot replicate. You have to stay with a place long enough to see it.

All Over Coffee began as an experiment: what happens when you remove the narrative from a comic strip and leave only the image and a fragment of language? The strip became a space for the kind of thought that doesn't resolve — observations, half-sentences, the texture of a day.

I am interested in the city as a record of human intention — the decisions embedded in every building, every street, every threshold. Drawing is a way of reading that record.
